Westview Elementary

K-5

At Westview Elementary, K–5 students attend Volkswagen eLab weekly for hands-on, project-based learning connected to academic standards. Students become designers, engineers, creators, and problem-solvers as they imagine, plan, build, test, and improve their ideas. Using digital fabrication tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and 3D pens, students collaborate, persevere through challenges, and bring their learning to life.

Grade Levels:

VW eLab Specialist

Nicole Webb

Nicole Webb has been an educator for 17 years and is beginning her fourth year as Westview’s VW eLab Specialist. She loves engaging students in hands-on STEM learning that builds curiosity, creativity, and perseverance. Nicole lives in Chattanooga with her husband and three children and enjoys church small group, cheering on her kids in sports, and trying new recipes.

Impact

When I became Westview’s VW eLab Specialist, I was excited by the opportunity to impact every student who walks through our doors. My goal is to create a learning environment where students are excited to take risks, create, explore, and discover that learning can be both challenging and fun. The impact of VW eLab goes far beyond the projects students create. Through project-based learning, students develop essential skills such as perseverance, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and collaboration. When a design fails, they learn to try again. When teammates disagree, they practice listening, compromising, and working together. One of the greatest gifts of my role is watching students grow from Kindergarten through 5th grade. I see their confidence, independence, and abilities develop year after year. It is especially rewarding to watch students who may struggle in a traditional classroom discover their strengths and experience success in VW eLab. I will never forget a new student who joined Westview midyear. During his first VW eLab class, he jumped right into our Peter Pan Circuit Houses project. At the end of class, he told me, “eLab isn’t anything like I thought it would be—this is like summer camp! I love it!” Moments like this capture the impact I hope our lab has on every child: a place where all students feel excited to learn, empowered to create, and confident that they can be successful.

Project Highlights

Project-based learning in VW eLab gives students opportunities to apply academic content through meaningful, hands-on experiences while developing skills in engineering, collaboration, and problem-solving. One of our first-grade favorites is the Humpty Dumpty Safety Gear Challenge. Students explore how safety equipment is designed and discover that effective safety gear is often soft on the inside and hard on the outside. Working with a partner, students design and build protective gear for “Humpty Dumpty” using everyday materials such as cotton balls, foam, bubble wrap, cardboard, and Styrofoam. Students test their prototypes by dropping them from the playground, evaluate the results, and redesign based on their findings. The project culminates with a Celebration of Learning when our local fire department visits Westview and drops the final designs from a fire truck! Through this experience, students learn to communicate, follow a plan, test ideas, and persevere through redesign. It is such a memorable experience that students return year after year asking to do it again. In fourth grade, students take on the Energy Roller Coaster Challenge. Teams design and build a roller coaster out of tape, paper, and cardboard that demonstrates potential and kinetic energy. Students use digital fabrication by designing and 3D printing a custom cart to travel through their coaster. Their design must include a turn greater than 90 degrees and successfully deliver the cart into a cup at the end. The real learning happens through the challenge: students continually test, adjust, and rebuild their tracks until they discover a successful solution. The excitement when a cart finally completes the entire coaster is a powerful reminder that perseverance, collaboration, and the engineering design process can turn failure into success.
