At Lookout Mountain Elementary's VW eLab, students build creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration skills while developing technical abilities in 3D printing, laser cutting, robotics, and hands-on tools. Through the Engineering Design Process, they create purposeful, real-world products. Struggle is normalized, perseverance is valued, and process drives learning as students grow into self-sufficient, lifelong learners.

Mary Avans
Mary Avans brings over 15 years of STEM experience to the eLab. As part of the initial STEM initiative in Hamilton County Schools over a decade ago, she understands how to develop students’ skills and foster self-reliance in the creation process. Mrs. Avans supports students in bringing their imagination to life and loves how they constantly surprise her when she steps out of their way.

Impact
Lookout Mountain Elementary’s VW eLab transitioned from a traditional Science Lab to an eLab in 2024 to strengthen students’ critical thinking and empower them to use technology as creators, not just consumers. Kindergarten through fifth grade students attend weekly and are greeted with, “Hello, _____ grade engineers!”—a reminder that they are engaged in authentic, meaningful work. Students use 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, robots, and microcontrollers to experiment, design, and problem-solve. Projects often span multiple class periods as students move through the Engineering Design Process, applying and extending classroom learning. Along the way, they discover that failure is not final but an opportunity to revise and improve—just like real engineers. Mrs. Avans intentionally designs challenges that serve the school community. Fourth graders created directional hallway signage after empathizing with visitors who struggled to navigate the building. Second graders engineered shelters to protect animals from the elements, combining research, creativity, and design. The eLab prepares students for future academic and career pathways by building resilience, collaboration, and technical skills. Grandparents tour the lab annually, and students proudly showcase their work. Parents are invited each year to learn alongside their children. By making learning purposeful and connected to real life, the VW eLab cultivates curiosity, confidence, and empathy—empowering every child to see themselves as a capable designer and problem solver.
Project Highlights
This VW eLab focuses on building students’ technical and essential skills across grade levels while designing and creating with purpose—and sometimes just for fun. Integrating academic content into the creation process gives relevance to the “why” behind engineering.
