K-12

The CSAS VW eLab brings classroom learning to life through hands-on projects and digital fabrication. From kindergarten toy designers to middle school makers exploring algebra, students design, build, test, and improve their creations. They develop confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills as they take ownership of their learning, explain their thinking, and show teachers their strengths in new ways.

VW eLab Specialist

Ginger King is the VW eLab Specialist at CSAS, a K-12 Paideia magnet school. Ginger loves all things dig fab and isn't afraid to go as low tech as glue guns and as technical as CNC router projects.

Impact

At CSAS, the VW eLab is helping students build confidence, take ownership of their learning, and show teachers what they can do when given the opportunity to create.

After visiting the lab for the first time in years, a longtime fifth grade teacher was inspired to take a student team to Science Olympiad for the first time, with support from the VW eLab Specialist. Students completed all of the project work themselves and placed in the top three in all but one category they entered. Just as meaningful was the change afterward: students showed greater confidence in themselves and their abilities.

That success helped spark interest among other teachers. Teachers who had never used the VW eLab are now booking time and discovering new sides of their students. They are seeing stronger engagement, positive changes in behavior, and students willingly taking their work further.

Sometimes, the impact is captured in a single moment. While the Specialist quietly watched a sixth grader work on a design, the student paused and said, “Let me explain my thinking.” He clearly explained what he was doing and why. After spending much of the year learning in the VW eLab, he was developing more than design skills. He had the confidence and language to make his thinking visible.

Project Highlights

Kindergarten Toy Designers: Our youngest makers become toy experts as they design and build toys from recycled materials. Students “shop” for supplies and construct their creations one step at a time, practicing planning, sequencing, and creative problem-solving as they turn an idea into something they can play with.

Fifth Grade Roller Coasters: Science takes a thrilling turn as students explore forces and motion by designing and building roller coasters. They test how an object travels along their tracks, identify trouble spots, and revise their designs until they meet the project’s requirements. Each test gives students new evidence to guide their next improvement.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Lombard Street Project: Algebra students connect coordinate plotting with three-dimensional design as they create their own versions of Lombard Street. Working with x, y, and z coordinates, students develop designs that are cut using the ShopBot CNC router, then test them at different angles. The project connects abstract math concepts to a physical model students can examine, test, and refine.
