Middle Valley Elementary

K-5

The MVES VW eLab is a place where curiosity comes to life! During our lessons, students design, build, create, experiment, and solve real-world problems using technology and innovative tools. From 3D printing to engineering challenges, every student has the opportunity to turn big ideas into something MARVELous. The VW eLab is where creativity meets learning opportunities and where our Marvels discover that they can do hard things every day!

Sierra Magee

Hi! I’m Mrs. Magee! I’m a Pittsburgh girl who somehow made her way from working at Disney to helping kids turn big ideas into reality through our VW eLab! I love trying new things, and getting creative especially when 3D printing is involved. I believe the best learning happens when you’re curious, willing to try, and not afraid to make a few mistakes along the way.

Impact

The MVES VW eLab has become a place where students discover that learning is something they can touch, build, test, and create. More than a makerspace, the VW eLab helps create a school-wide culture of curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and problem solving. It gives every student opportunities to explore ideas, take risks, learn from failure, and discover that they are capable of creating solutions. The impact of our VW eLab reaches far beyond the walls of the classroom. By collaborating with teachers across grade levels and subject areas, as well as bringing in partners from our community, the VW eLab helps bring classroom learning to life and gives students authentic opportunities to apply what they are learning. It provides a space where students can make connections, use technology with purpose, and develop skills that will serve them well beyond elementary school. Perhaps the greatest impact is the confidence it builds. Students begin to see themselves as designers, engineers, creators, communicators, and innovators. They learn that there is value in asking “What if?”, trying something new, and figuring out what to do when something doesn't work the first time. The VW eLab is helping our students understand that their ideas matter, their voices matter, and they have the power to turn an idea into something MARVELous.

Project Highlights

Kindergarten Donut Day: Kindergarten students explored their five senses through a fun, hands-on experience that connected STEM, creativity, and community. Students used their imaginations to design and create a donut. They then made observations about the donut using their five senses. A community partner made these donuts for us, making this possible! Students learned that STEM can be found in unexpected and delicious places! 2nd Grade Super Animals: Second graders became animal scientists and engineers as they explored animal adaptations. Students learned how animals' structures and behaviors help them survive, then used what they learned to imagine and create their own “super animal" masks. This project encouraged students to think creatively while applying science concepts to their own designs. 3rd Grade Collaborative Mural: Third graders worked together on a large-scale collaborative mural using recycled bottle caps. Students collected, sorted, designed, and assembled materials while making connections to science and environmental responsibility. Beyond the finished artwork, the project taught students the power of teamwork, perseverance, and the fun of power tools! Along the way, they created something much bigger than any one person could create alone.
