Brown Middle School

6-8

The VW eLab at Brown Middle School is made up of two large rooms. One room serves as a classroom and computer lab for designing and planning. Most equipment is housed in the back room. We have 3D printers, laser cutters, a CNC machine, a vinyl cutter, heat presses, woodworking and carpentry equipment, and tools for building electronic circuits.

Impact

The VW eLab at Brown Middle School has provided access to technology that our students would not experience otherwise. Our students have been able to develop skills, pursue creativity, and engineer solutions because of these resources. We focus on teaching them how to make things using 3D printing, laser cutting, electronics and microprocessors, carpentry, vinyl cutting, and heat pressing. Our students create products to meet design challenges in subjects such as career education, science, math, social studies, language arts, and fine arts. Students have enjoyed using laser cutting to bring their art into a new medium. Having their art turned into laser etchings on foam board or wood has encouraged them to add graphic design skills to their drawing skills. This also gives them experience in formatting, measuring accurately, file management, and improvement through iteration. Our students have often shown interest in healthcare-related creations. One student designed a stethoscope that was 3D printed and used balloon material as the diaphragm. Another student developed finger splints that were easy to use and print. Currently, a student is designing a hoodie for people with sensory issues. She wants to incorporate specific fabrics and 3D printed elements to meet their needs. Students interested in photography have 3D printed models and then learned how to use perspective to make them look realistic and massive. Students interested in electronics and sound design have built synthesizers from electronic components and speakers out of a transducer and foam board.

Project Highlights

As a part of our career education course, 8th-grade students created businesses with marketing plans, budgets, and product examples. These students used the VW eLab to make real examples of their products and then held a career fair. They pretended to be operational businesses, and the 6th graders came to the fair, chose the businesses they were interested in, and went through an interview. Many of the businesses had created samples that people could take with them.
